2008 QomolangmaMIURA Project
-Journey to the Majestic Summit-
In 2008, the year of Beijing Olympic Games, the Olympic Flame is planned
to travel Silk Road Mountains to light the peak of Qomolangma.Yuichiro
Miura, together with his son Gota, will once again aim to summit the world’s
highest peak.Winged by their skis, the father and son will fly through
the shimmering world of Monkey King.
Project Mission
May 1970
Yuichiro Miura became the first man ever to ski down Mt. Everest from South Col at 8000m in altitude, writing a new page in the history of exploration and adventure. Its documentary film “THE MAN WHO SKIED DOWN EVEREST” has won the Academy Award for Foreign Documentary Film in 1976.
May 2003
Miura at age 70 and 7 months set a world record as the oldest man to reach the summit of Qomolangma (8848m) together with his son, Gota. This achievement received worldwide media attention and was recognized that he expanded the horizon for the elderly and inspired all of us in our aging society today.
It is said that if Mt. Everest were 50 meters higher, a mortal human shall never reach its summit. Thus, the summit of Mt. Everest is a sacred point that connects the earth to the universe.
The next goal of Miura is to reach the summit of Qomolangma from China in 2008, the year of Beijing Olympic Games.
Mt. Everest is called Qomolangma, which means Mother Goddess of the Earth
in Tibetan, and it lies on the border between Nepal and China. Miura
has reached its summit twice in the past from Nepal and plans to do it
once more from China in year 2008, the year of Beijing Olympic Games.
In year 2008 China will be in the world’s spotlight for hosting the Games
of 29th Olympiad. The Beijing Organizing Committee of the Games had announced
its plan to bring the Olympic torch from Athens through the Silk Road over
Qomolangma. Having the symbol of the world’s festival of athletes go over
the world’s roof to be lit in China is certainly one of the most significant
projects in sports history. As the world attends to China for this spectacular
event, we will also develop our own projects leading to our ultimate goal,
the summit of Qomolangma.
Focusing on year 2008, Yuichiro Miura and his son Gota will be conducting training expeditions for physical fitness and acclimatization (i.e., altitude adaptation). Targeted mountains are of 6000m to 8000m in altitude, and include the sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism, the mountains of Silk Road, and the mountains of Monkey King. Miuras will use their skis as their wings to fly though the mountains as Monkey King did with his cloud.
It is our quest for the ultimate anti-aging.
Utilizing their know-how obtained through 2003 Qomolangma expedition, Miura Dolphins opened MIURA BASE CAMP, a multi-purpose athletic compound equipped with hypoxic (low oxygen) and hyperoxic (high oxygen) training system in February 2005. The oxygen concentration level can be controlled to altitude of 6300m for hypoxic training facility, and for hyperoxic training facility, it can be increased up to 40 %, which is twice as much as the normal O2 concentration level (i.e., 21%). These facilities enable high altitude training and oxygen-controlled fitness conditioning being in the heart of Tokyo, and have already obtained significant results with top athletes, such as candidates for Torino Winter Olympic Games, Japanese National Volleyball Team player, K-1 fighters and marathon runners, as well as with climbers of 8000m class Himalayas expeditions and expeditions by the elderly climbers. Anti-Aging programs using high-pressure air chamber and seminars are also scheduled to be held in the near future.
For Qomolangma 2008 Project, this MIURA BASE CAMP will serve as the base camp in Tokyo where Yuichiro and Gota will base their training and activities, as well as to conduct scientific research such as physiological data analysis in hypoxic training, in collaboration with Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology and other relevant institutes.
In the 2003 Qomolangma project, the pictures and messages of the Miura party in action was sent out on a real time basis to the world, using the most advanced communication technology at the time. It was recognized as a breakthrough that brought the Himalayan expeditions closer to the world. For the 2008 expedition, further advanced satellite technology will be used to send out real time images and movies, as well as medical data obtained, which will be recorded and analyzed at the base camp.
In 2003, as the Principal of Clark Memorial International High School with 10,000 students throughout Japan, Miura carried out the Nepal Charity Project with his students along with his Qomolangma expedition. The students visited Nepal as civil ambassadors and raised funds for establishing an elementary school in Patan, Katmandu. As a part of his 2008 project, Miura plans and explores the possibility to coordinate a friendship expedition by a joint party of Chinese and Japanese students targeting a mountain of 6000m in altitude, as well as having the students in charge of communication in the 2008 expedition at Qomolangma base camp.
