Born in Aomori Prefecture, Japan on October 12, 1932. He became the first Japanese Professional Skier to participate various International competitions including US Professional Ski Circuit, Italian Kilometer Lanchard (Speed Skiing Competition) where in 1964 accomplished world Speed skiing record of 172.084 km at that time. Among many of expeditions and competition, his most well known worldwide accomplishment is in 1970 when he became the first man ever to ski down the worldfs highest peak - Mt. Everest - from South col at 8,000 m altitude. Its documentary film gTHE MAN WHO SKIED DOWN EVERESTh has won the Academy award (Foreign Documentary film division) in 1976. After Everestfs descent, he succeeds to ski down from highest peaks of seven continents.In 2003, at age of 70, he and his second son Gota climbed Mt. Everest and set the world record of oldest person to reach the summit at the time, as well as setting the record of the first Japanese father and son summit. He now trains to challenge summiting the worldfs highest peak Mt. Everest once again in year 2008. Yuichiro is world-widely known as an Adventure Skier as well as an opinion leader in Japan in sports, culture to education arenas. He has written variety of books, and produced series of adventure documentary films.
Gota Miura
Born in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture on August
10th, 1969. Summits Mt.Kilimanjaro, Africa as the youngest summiteer
at age 11 with his family, and has also gone on family expeditions to Mt.
Elbrus, Russia, and Monte Rosa, Switzerland. Starts participating in Freestyle
Ski Mogul competitions in 1991 and has won numerous titles in Japanese
Nationals and in World Cups for the next 10 years. Major titles include 13th
Place in Nagano Winter Olympics (currently highest ranking for Japanese Men
division) and 5th Place in World Cup, becoming a leader-like figure for Japanese Mogul world.
Returns to university in 1999, he graduates with a B.A in Sports Physiology
from University of Utah in May 2001. After graduating, he joins Miura Dolphins
Co. Ltd., where he acts as a commentator in major competitions such as
World Cup and Winter Olympics, an organizer and participant in sporting
events, a regular contributor in ski magazines as well as his occupation
as a professional skier. In 2003, he summits the worldfs highest peak Mt.
Everest (8848m) with his father Yuichiro Miura, and marks the record of
being the first Japanese father-and-son Everest summiteers. Currently,
works as the manager and developer of Miura Base Camp hypoxic training
system in Miura Dolphins Co. Ltd., and is a researcher for Tokyo Metropolitan
Research Institute for Gentology. Also an advisory staff for K2 Skis and
Goldwin (The North Face).
